“How will you be good at something if you don’t know what came before you?”- HISTPHO (History of Photography) professor.
No, I’m not lazy to update my blog or plan for shoots as a practice tool. If there’s one thing I realized that is to truly value the process of learning. I realized that at a certain point, I had been TOO eager and had been TOO much in a hurry. Yes it was a result of me being passionate however, I mistakenly forgot what was truly essential.
My HISTPHO professor once asked us, “how do you distinguish a great photographer from a good one?”. I wondered and couldn’t really answer it. He told us that photography is not about following the rules but KNOWING the rules religiously and eventually setting up new rules/styles that make you different from the others. He was right. Not because he was my teacher but because he knows what he’s saying. I’ve been pre-occupied for months studying how photography evolved and realized that it is really essential to study the past.
Sometimes I question myself, “would it really affect me if I get behind from others because I’m not shooting but rather practicing personally and studying?”. The answer is.. NO.
Besides the faith that I have with this opportunity God gave me, I trust destiny. I trust my education, I trust my professors, I trust the books but most of all, I trust myself.
Most photographers who made a mark in the past became known not because they were in a hurry for fame and fortune but rather, they knew every single piece of thing they were doing. Before I call myself a “photographer” I would like first to gain the experience and education that I could get and actually take time to improve on my craft. For in the end, all of these hard work and patience would result into something I would not regret in the end.
So I apologize if my blog bores you.. HAHAH Not everyone may appreciate these.. but photography is photography, and I am proud to say that I am back to basics! :-)
